Huge McCoy shock

AP McCoy has shocked the racing world by announcing he will retire at the end of the season.

The 15-time champion jump jockey dropped the bombshell after riding Mr Mole to victory at Newbury for his 200th winner of the season.

It is the 19th occasion he has reached the double century mark for the season.

The 40-year-old is widely regarded as the greatest ever jump jockey having won 19 consecutive Champion Jockey titles and riding over 4,000 winners and says he wants to go out at the top.

"I want to go out as Champion Jockey. It will be my 20th year winning the jockey's championship and I want to go out whilst I still enjoy riding," he told Channel 4 Racing.

Plans will no doubt be made to mark the occasion on Bet365 Gold Cup day at Sandown Park in April when the curtain comes down on the season and the career of one of the most extraordinary of sportsmen.
